Former homeless man now does the helping

December 07, 2010"Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." — Matthew 4:19

Billy Bishop likes to start his days at the Sunnyside Restaurant on Main Street in Hyannis.

That way he can be close to the liquor store frequented by many of the local homeless people who rely on alcohol to numb the pain in their souls and warm their cold, tired bones.

Living on the streets is never easy, but it's especially difficult in the winter — even if you're lucky enough to have a makeshift tent to block the bite of the frigid air.

The Sunnyside, Billy says, is a good place to redirect some of his homeless "brothers and sisters" — many of whom spend their time shuffling between the NOAH Shelter off North Street and the Main Street area. The lure: a good cup of hot coffee and conversation.

See, Billy knows a bit about lures. Having worked as a commercial fisherman for 35 years — from Provincetown to Georges Bank — the 68-year-old Hyannis man has gone from the belly of the whale like Jonah to being a fisher of men and women living on the streets. It's a redemption story of biblical proportions.

Once homeless himself, he is now president of Homeless Not Hopeless Inc. (HNH), a nonprofit organization that's literally been fishing the fallen off the streets, one by one.

Reading this story with my coffee this morning, I became overwhelmed with gratitude for all that I have in my life. Am normally in a state of gratitude, this article is a huge reminder of just how `wealthy` I truly am. I love you Humbled.
