The Patriots [team stats]-Jets game wasn’t an easy romp for everyone: Police said more than 100 fans were detained by cops at Gillette Stadium during the smack down Monday night — a possible record for a home game win in Foxboro.

“We took 112 people into custody — a number significantly higher than previous football games,” said Foxboro Police Chief Edward O’Leary. “There were 15 charged with a variety of criminal offenses and 97 were taken into protective custody due to alcohol intoxication.”

The most he could recall being previously detained at a game was when 80 were put into custody during a night game last year.

Charges brought against rowdy fans included disorderly conduct, assault and battery and trespassing.

Ironically, O’Leary said, the Pats blowout over the Jets with a final score of 45-3 may have been to blame for the shenanigans.

“When the game gets one-sided, the fans lose interest and start arguing with those seated in other rows or areas of the stadium,” O’Leary said. “The disparity in points kept people from focusing on the game.”

Patriots and Gillette Stadium spokesman Stacey James said night games typically have higher protective custody numbers than day games but the organization works closely with local and state agencies to ensure that the 68,000 patrons can enjoy their game without a hitch.

Out of 68,000 fans, mixing their football passion & alcohol, only 112 people brought into custody ? Somehow this seems like a low number.
