Reform could end alimony for life-

Post  mermaid on Sun Jan 30, 2011 8:01 am

Massachusetts’ alimony-for-life law could come to an end under a “radical” reform bill being pitched by a compromise coalition of divorce attorneys, women’s legal advocates and lawmakers who say the plan is the best chance yet to fix the antiquated system.

“It is radical, comprehensive, real sweeping reform,” said Denise Squillante, a family law attorney in Fall River and president of the Massachusetts Bar Association, which supports the legislation filed this month.

The proposal would end lifetime alimony payments in most cases, put limits on how long and how much one ex is required to pay another and encourage warring spouses to settle out of court.
