May 25, 2011HARWICH — Make way for Bill McDonagh and his ducks Biff and Iff. It's time for their afternoon constitutional at Red River Beach.

The ducklings follow McDonagh everywhere. After all, Biff and Iff have known him since they were eggs.

McDonagh hatched them in an incubator and brought them up. When they were really little, Biff and Iff got to hang around in the house, but that got a bit messy.

Now they're 6 weeks old, and quality "family" time means a walk at the beach, in close formation. McDonagh sort of quacks and the ducks quack back. Off they go.

"I thought it was a Geico commercial in the making," said stunned observer Rachel Kirchgessner of Harwich.

"These two guys just kind of think I'm their mother," said McDonagh, 49, of Orleans. "I take them to a different beach every night."

Soon, McDonagh will give the ducks their first swimming lesson. "They won't go in the water until I go in the water and I won't go in the water until the middle of June," he said.

Then, Biff and Iff will head off to live at McDonagh's friend's house in New York, where a pond awaits.

"These guys will probably go there with a bunch of other ducks and live out a nice duck life, I guess," McDonagh said.

Ducks bond with humans all the time.

"It's called imprinting and it's very common, especially in waterfowl," said Pam Nixon, assistant manager of the MSPCA's Nevins Farm in Methuen. "(McDonagh) was the first being that they saw, so they automatically assume he's the one they should follow around."

Biff and Iff see McDonagh as their protector, too.

"They are very heavily dependent on who they imprinted on for safety," Nixon said.

McDonagh said he'll miss the ducks when they move on, but he'll have plenty of fowl memories.

Like that road trip to New York City the day after Biff and Iff were born.

"I couldn't just leave them," McDonagh said.
