CUMMAQUID — You'll likely never see the secretive fisher in the woodlands of Cape Cod. But you may hear their distinctive ringtone — a spine-tingling shriek in the night.

"Bloodcurdling," is how Heather Fone, an animal care technician at the Humane Society of the United States' Cape Wildlife Center, describes the creature's caterwaul. "It really is piercing. Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it."

That may sound frightening, but don't worry. Fishers are unlikely to pose any threat to humans, officials say.

Two juvenile fishers — a male and female that are both about fourmonths old — are being cared for at the Cape wildlife rehabilitation center. The vulnerable youngsters were found separately without their mothers and were brought to the center, where the orphans will live until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

The fisher is one of the largest members of the Mustelid family, which includes weasels, minks, otters and skunks. Elusive and solitary, fishers are most active at dusk, nighttime and dawn in the summer and during daytime in the winter.

"They don't like to go across open areas at all," said Joy Frankio, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator at the Cape rehabilitation center. "They like to be in thick, canopied trees where there's a nice source of squirrels."

The female fisher was found in a ditch in Plymouth by some children before being brought to Cummaquid. She was bright, alert, playful and teething, Fone said.

"She wasn't traumatized," Fone added. "She was deemed very healthy."

The male fisher was suffering when he was found under a deck in Sagamore Beach. Animal care specialists had to remove about 80 ticks that had infested the animal. He was given fluids and a dose of antibiotics to ward off any infection, Fone said.

The pair are now fully healthy and Frankio said state wildlife officials will determine an appropriate wooded area for their release, which could happen by early September.

Though found in many Massachusetts communities, fishers have been expanding their range to the southeastern part of the state in recent years, according to Laura Hajduk, leader of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife's furbearer project.

The first confirmed Cape fisher was found dead in Sandwich near the Massachusetts Military Reservation six years ago. Fishers have since been spotted in other local towns including Chatham and Wellfleet.

"Given that fishers have been on the Cape since 2005, it would be surprising if you didn't have some breeding," Hajduk said.

Fishers have also developed an unfair bad rap, Hajduk said. They feed on small animals, which can include domestic cats, but the likelihood of a human ever seeing one on the Cape is very low.

"They are not the vicious animal that a lot of times people think they are," she said.
