Police aid suicidal man at Yarmouth bridge

March 22, 2012

WEST YARMOUTH — Police convinced a West Yarmouth man not to harm himself after he threatened suicide Wednesday morning on the Parker's River Bridge.

Police responded to the bridge on Route 28 in West Yarmouth after the man, 41, was armed with a 4-inch folding knife and was standing on the edge of the bridge guardrail.

Patrol officers from the Yarmouth Police Department, along with Yarmouth fire crews, members of the Department of Natural Resources and the state police arrived on the scene around 11:30 p.m.

Nearby businesses were evacuated and traffic from Route 28 was detoured for 45 minutes as responders launched a rescue boat and established a command post.

A negotiator was called to the scene and after 20 minutes the man was convinced to throw his knife in the river.

He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation.
