Locals object to how 'The Vineyard' portrays island life

July 30, 2013

I'm sitting in a TV room on Martha's Vineyard with four true islanders. We're watching the premiere of ABC Family's new "reality" docu-drama "The Vineyard." Cast-members Luis D'Agostino and Jon Franco supposedly have their first encounter (they just happen to be on the same ferry) as D'Agostino bumps into Franco, causing Franco to softly mutter "jerk." It's the groan heard around the island.

I'm not ashamed to admit I absolutely love reality television. I avidly "keep up" with the Kardashians. I cry as the once "seven strangers" say goodbye when their season of "The Real World" wraps. And after every season of "Jersey Shore," I feel compelled to wear more form-fitting, leopard-print clothing.

But on Tuesday night. I felt something I had never felt while watching a reality show: I felt offended.
"Reality"? I'm offended by your "Reality".
And the show.
And the article.
And your viewing choices (I liked "Sharknado").
