Once-neglected mini golf course earns Golden Trowel

DENNIS PORT — A miniature golf course tucked behind a strip mall off Lower County Road is this year's winner of the Village Garden Club of Dennis' Golden Trowel, awarded to a local business "which has enhanced its landscaping beauty through outstanding creative plantings."

The award is a sign of how far Susan's Garden Mini Golf has come in the last 10 years.

When Priscilla and Carl Whittemore bought the property in 2004, the course, which had long fallen into disuse, was hidden beneath an unkempt snarl of brush.

"The father of the family who owned it passed away and his three daughters lived out of state," Priscilla Whittemore said.

She and her husband purchased the 2.7 acres, which included the strip mall and a house as well as the golf course, as an investment. But instead of simply clearing the remnants of the crumbling 18-hole course, the Whittemores put in hundreds of hours of thought and effort to restore it to what it would have looked like in the 1950s, when it first opened.

Carl Whittemore, a Dennis native, remembered the course from his childhood, although he didn't have the money to play there.

"Now he owned it," his wife said.
